Wayne Rooney expects rejuvenated Manchester United to challenge for EPL title

The Red Devil's have already signed big names like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, midfielder Henrikh Mkhityaran and defender Eric Bailly. They are also rumoured to be negotiating for Paul Pogba.
Manchester United have been rejuvenated under new manager Jose Mourinho and are poised to mount a strong challenge for the Premier League title, skipper Wayne Rooney has said.
The 30-year-old forward, who secured his fifth league title with the club the last time they won it in 2013, scored eight top flight goals last season as United finished fifth and failed to qualify for the Champions League.
The 20-times English title winners have already signed striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, midfielder Henrikh Mkhityaran and defender Eric Bailly and according to local media reports, have been negotiating with Juventus over the transfer of Paul Pogba.
"I think the players feel this is more like the old Manchester United. It's not just the new signings, we've got Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford from last season who made such an impact," Rooney told the Daily Mail in an interview.
Rooney, who will line up against boyhood club Everton in his testimonial at Old Trafford on Wednesday, also hopes United can secure the annual Community Shield against English champions Leicester City at Wembley on Sunday.
"We're in a very good spot now, we think we can challenge for the Premier League, and we want to put a marker down, in the Community Shield with Leicester," Rooney added. "I know it's a one-off game, but we want to show we can win a trophy early on... we feel that's an important event for us."
United, who thrashed Turkish side Galatasaray 5-2 in a friendly on Saturday, open their league campaign with a trip to Bournemouth on Aug. 14.

Manchester United transfer news: Lazio forward Felipe Anderson unsure why his transfer to Old Trafford failed

The Brazilian forward is still open to leaving Lazio, if the offer is good for him and the club.

Lazio forward Felipe Anderson has revealed he is unsure as to why he was unable to complete a transfer to Manchester United. The 23-year-old was long been linked with a move to Old Trafford as the former Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal wanted to land him.
The Brazilian international was wanted by United in the summer of 2015. However, the 20-time English champions and the Serie A outfit were unable to agree on a transfer fee and that allowed United to sign Anthony Martial from AS Monaco.
Van Gaal wanted United to make an approach for Anderson in the January transfer window, but the deal did not take shape. Even the forward is unaware as to why his proposed move to the Premier League collapsed.
"Why it did not work for me? I don't know. But I am very calm, I have a very long contract ahead,"Anderson told Globo Esporte.
Despite Anderson's failed move to United, the player admitted that he is willing to leave his current employers in the summer transfer window, if Lazio receives an offer which is good for both the club and the forward.
"I have a good relationship with the club and when I receive a proposal that is good for me and especially for the club, I will leave, but I'm calm and I hope to do well in the Olympic team," the South America explained.
Meanwhile, Anderson remains hopeful that Lazio will release him to take part in the Rio 2016 Olympics. He revealed that it would be a dream for him to make it to Brazil squad for the global event in his homeland.
"You know how much it is difficult for the club to release a player, right? But we are talking, I have a good relationship with the team and, no doubt, it is a dream [the opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games at home]," Anderson stressed.

Man Utd handing keys of the kingdom to Mourinho and Mendes

The Special One and his agent built a significant power base at Real Madrid and with the Red Devils in need of a major overhaul, they could be set to rule once again
Jose Mourinho desperately wanted to replace Sir Alex Ferguson when he retired in 2013 and thought he was getting the job. Three years later, he is about to be given control while Manchester United are in disarray.
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has built up an undeniable partnership with Mendes that will endure for however long Mourinho stays. The club needs a strategy and is placing its future in the hands of the Portuguese power couple.
Mendes has been deeply embedded at Manchester United for a long time. He was the man who brought Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford in 2003 - his most important transfer - and was also involved in the deals which saw Anderson, Nani, David de Gea, Falcao, Angel Di Maria and Victor Valdes arrive at the club.
The playing staff will be overhauled and we should expect players with ties to Mendes to pitch up at Old Trafford. United fans would argue that if more players the quality of Anthony Martial arrive, then there will be no problem.
There have, of course, been difficulties for some of those Mendes clients under previous management but it is unlikely that under Mourinho the likes of De Gea or Di Maria would have been treated as they were under Louis van Gaal.

Overall, Mendes is more interested in the best for his players and not necessarily the club at which they play. Despite Ronaldo's success in Manchester, he had no qualms about moving him on to Madrid. The city has been good to De Gea but Mendes was ready to whip him away to the Santiago Bernabeu last summer.
United may have done Mendes a favour in the Bebe deal - where he cashed in for about €3.5 million of a €9m fee - but when push comes to shove, Mendes is in the business of moving players in... and out.
That will not stop him or Mourinho building their own extensive power base at the club for the duration of the manager's tenure.
In the book The Special One by Diego Torres, it was revealed that Mendes practically kept an office at Real Madrid's Valdebebas training ground, moving freely around the gym and canteen, unencumbered by the restrictions Mourinho placed even on the players' families.
He sat in Mourinho's chair and conducted business meetings in his office. Some of the players referred to him as "the boss".
Mourinho took on the might of Real Madrid, even if he ultimately lost. His grand ambition was to be the king of the Bernabeu. He aimed for total control; not only as first-team coach but contract facilitator, the man responsible for signing players, the man responsible for who in the press wrote what about his team.
If anyone doubted the ability of Mourinho - and his agent - to get out in front of a story then witness the pace at which news of Van Gaal's sacking followed the FA Cup win on Saturday.
Madrid became too institutionally hostile for him to continue and so Mourinho had to leave. There were deep divisions between the 'Spanish' and 'Portuguese' players during Mourinho's time there.
There was a perception - most keenly expressed by Iker Casillas - that the mostly Portuguese-speaking Mendes stable was given favourable treatment by the manager when it came to first-team minutes, contract renewals and portrayals through the media.
Not only that, but they heard first-hand from Mendes exactly what the manager had in store. They were close to decision-making processes. It was in a player's interests to align himself with Mendes or face the consequences.

At the time that Jorge Valdano left his role as sporting director in the summer of 2011 it appeared the coast was clear for Mourinho to rule for decades at Spain's most famous club.
He would have done so alongside his agent, friend and confidant, Mendes. He is arguably the most powerful man in football now, controlling the destiny of not only Mourinho but also players such as Ronaldo, Di Maria and James Rodriguez.
Scarcely a big deal goes by without Mendes having something to do with it and at one stage Mourinho's Real Madrid team featured not only Ronaldo and Di Maria but Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho and Fabio Coentrao. It would have been more, too, had Mourinho got his way and Hugo Almeida arrived from Werder Bremen.
Ferguson did not want Mourinho in charge when he left and that sentiment broadly holds. However, Ferguson, former chief executive David Gill and the United board are less involved in the decision making at Old Trafford these days. It could be the start of a new dynasty not only for Mourinho but also for Mendes.
Manchester United are not only hiring a manager; they may very well be handing over the keys to the kingdom to the Special One and his agent.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic to be handed Anthony Martial’s number

Zlatan Ibrahimovic hasn’t even arrived in Manchester yet but he’s already secured himself a squad number.
According to The Sun Ibrahimovic is set to be handed the number nine shirt when he puts pen to paper.
Zlatan-Ibrahimovic

But wait, what about Anthony Martial?

The Frenchman hasn’t been forgotten. He’ll take Memphis Depay’s number seven shirt, leaving the Dutchman in the lurch.
depay
United’s number nine has a checkered past. The artist formerly known as Andrew Cole scored bundles of goals but Radamel Falcao didn’t do the shirt justice.
Likewise the number seven, which has graced the back of Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia, Angel Di Maria and Depay fairly unsuccessfully in the last five years.
Angel Di Maria
Zlatan previously wore the number nine shirt at Juventus and Barcelona. His time at Juve ended in relegation, while he was bombed out of Barcelona after fighting with Pep Guadiola and Lionel Messi.
Let’s hope it’s third time lucky at Old Trafford.

Manchester United's Anthony Martial misses Norwich clash after pulling up injured in warm-up

Anthony Martial was injured in the warm-up at Carrow Road
Anthony Martial missed Manchester United's vital trip to Norwich after suffering an injury in the warm-up.
Martial was named in Louis van Gaal's starting line-up but turned back down the tunnel with a hamstring problem and was replaced by Ander Herrera for the 1-0 win at Carrow Road.
Any lay-off for their top scorer would be a major blow for Van Gaal's side, who are still hopeful of a top-four finish and have an FA Cup final date later this month which provides the the chance of a first piece of major silverware since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down.
Louis van Gaal did not want to risk Martial in the heat at Norwich
"Anthony felt something and I'm a manager who is not taking risks," van Gaal told MUTV. "Especially not in his situation and I said this to Anthony because he has played most of all the matches, like Daley Blind and Chris Smalling.
"He is 20 years old. I have to take care of him so he didn't play and Wayne had to play the striker's position. He gave an assist to Juan Mata and it has been solved very well.
"When a player says he feels something, he shall not play. I think you have to be fit - especially in this weather as that is a big difference. We have to see on Sunday if the muscle is tight."
United's injury worries continued after kick-off as Matteo Darmian was forced off inside the opening 15 minutes clutching his ankle, before being replaced by Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.
Van Gaal confirmed the Italy international, who was injured attempt to halt Ivo Pinto, will be assessed.
"We have to wait and see," Van Gaal added. "Darmian has a kick on the ankle so we will have to see the reaction tomorrow (Sunday).
"It is too early to say. Now he is walking in a brace but, tomorrow, it can be good again because a kick is a kick."

Manchester United give Anthony Martial injury update

Frenchman missed Man Utd win at Norwich after picking up an injury in the warm up.

Anthony Martial will be assessed on Sunday before Louis van Gaal decides whether the Frenchman is fit to face West Ham on Tuesday.
Martial was named in the Dutchman's team to face Norwich on Saturday before picking up a hamstring injury in the warm up.
And Van Gaal admitted he doesn't know whether the 20-year-old will be fit to play at Upton Park.
He said: "Anthony felt something and I'm a manager who is not taking risks. Especially not in his situation and I said this to Anthony because he has played most of all the matches, like Daley Blind and Chris Smalling.

Anthony Martial while speaking to Sky Sports said
“The Premier League is more physically demanding than Ligue 1”
‘I love English football, it’s the best in the world in my opinion, and I hope to stay here for many years to come.
‘It’s true that the atmosphere here is quite different from the one in France, people live and breathe football here, and that’s what I like, every footballer wants to play in the Premier League
‘In France it’s easy to know which team is going to win the game, where as in England anywhere you play, you know it’s going to be difficult.
‘I think it made me realise how physically strong I am, I wasn’t aware of it while playing for Monaco, as I wasn’t playing consistently. I think the manager believes in me and I make sure I look after myself as well as my diet in order to be fit for games.

Anthony Martial admits he loves English football

Anthony Martial
Many people raised an eyebrow when Manchester United signed Anthony Martial, who was at the time 19-years-old, from French side AS Monaco in the summer. But Martial was quick to silence those critics after scoring a memorable goal at Old Trafford against rivals Liverpool before scoring a brace against Southampton in his second outing for the Red Devils. The France international also became the first United player to win the Premier League player of the month since Robin van Persie in 2013, in his first month in English football.
In my opinion, in what has been a disappointing and underwhelming season so far for United, Anthony Martial has been one of the very few positives. Although, many criticise the young Frenchman for seeming ‘unbothered’ particularly when he misses a few chances, however, in his first in-depth interview with Sky Sports ahead of the Manchester derby our number nine was quick to set the record straight.
“I have always been that way, and people’s opinions will not change it, but one must know that when I fail to score a goal I do get angry with myself. I have always been like that and I have been told that quite a lot.”
Martial has played 39 games for Louis van Gaal’s side this season, which is a lot for a 20-year-old still developing, and the side has been criticised for relying too much on the youngster on some occasions. The forward is United’s second top goal scorer so far this season with 12 goals in all competitions, just two behind the captain Wayne Rooney.
The French star is insistent that he is a striker and admits when he manages to get on the scoresheet he is a happier, although, he adds that he is happy to play anywhere as long as he is helping the team after being used on the left-wing on many occasions by our Dutch manager.
“Foremost I am a striker, it doesn’t bother me at all which position I play, when I am on the pitch I just focus on helping the team that’s all. I just want to help the team, and when I score I am happier, I am a striker and that’s how it goes.”
Despite that, statistically Martial has a better goals to game record when playing out wide as opposed to playing centrally for Manchester United and AS Monaco combined this season. He has scored five times in 26 games as a centre forward, but, six in 16 games when playing on the left flank. Adding to that, the youngster has provided five goals since playing on the left, and just four when playing as a striker.
After winning the 2015 Golden Boy award, which is an award given to the best under 21 player in Europe, voted by journalists from 30 major newspapers across the Europe, he is seemingly enjoying his time in England. He has already branded the Premier League as the best league in the world and insists he wants to remain in the league for many years to come. Which is supposedly music to all United fans ears.
“The Premier League is more physically demanding than Ligue 1. I love English football, it’s the best in the world in my opinion, and I hope to stay here for many years to come. It’s true that the atmosphere here is quite different from the one in France, people live and breathe football here, and that’s what I like, every footballer wants to play in the Premier League.”
The Frenchman is tipped to almost certainly be selected for Didier Deschamps squad for the European Championship in the summer and he admits he enjoys the competitive nature of English football and adds he did not realise until he began playing in the division how physically strong he could be.
“In France it’s easy to know which team is going to win the game, where as in England anywhere you play, you know it’s going to be difficult.
“I think it made me realise how physically strong I am, I wasn’t aware of it while playing for Monaco, as I wasn’t playing consistently. I think the manager believes in me and I make sure I look after myself as well as my diet in order to be fit for games.”
In my opinion, I feel United have got one of the hottest young talents in world football in our hands and it is clear to see that he has something special when you watch him play week in week out. That cool and calm nature that he struts around with, I kind of like, and it pays off as he rarely seems to panic when in front of goal. He signed for a reportedly hefty price tag and with that carries quite a lot pressure, however, he does not seem fazed. It is true that we probably have relied on him at times and he certainly seems our biggest attacking threat.
Many will disagree, but I personally prefer Martial out wide. Not only because United average a better points per game ratio when playing him out wide, but because that is where I feel it allows him to have more of a say on the game, it involves him more. Many United attackers have looked segregated and lacked service when playing as a striker this season, including Martial when he has played down the middle at times. Him being out wide gives him more freedom, allows him to get the ball at his feet and run at defenders. As a forward Martial averages 45.2 touches per game, but as a winger, he averages 50.9 touches per game, which backs my point. He also averages a better chance creation, successful dribbles and total shots on target ratio when playing out wide, in comparison to him being our out-and-out striker.
It is something that is up for debate, but no one can deny that we have a huge talent on our hands. Personally, for me, he along with David De Gea is in the running to be Manchester United’s player of the season and I would not be surprised to see him handed the award at the end of the campaign.
